The Patron Saint of Liars, Ann Patchett
Unanticipated pregnancy makes liars out of young women, this thoughtful first novel shows, as they try to rationalize, explain, and accept what is happening to them. When she arrives at St. Elizabeth's, a home for pregnant girls in Habit, Kentucky, Rose Clinton seems as evasive and deceptive as the other unwed mothers. But Rose is different: she has a husband whom she has deserted. Unlike most St. Elizabeth's visitors, she neither gives up her baby nor leaves the home, staying on as cook while her daughter grows up among expectant mothers fantasizing that they, too, might keep their infants. The reader learns from Rose how she came to St. Elizabeth's, but it is her doting husband and rebellious daughter who reveal her motives and helpless need for freedom. Together, the three create a complex character study of a woman driven by forces she can neither understand nor control.

Wayne 'The Train' Hancock at The Iron Horse
Hank Williams III. Wayne "The Train" Hancock has been called "the master of hillbilly swing," a "roots Renaissance man," a "country singer's country singer" and "Hank Williams meets Gershwin." But the phrase most frequently echoed throughout his career is "Wayne Hancock is the real deal." Joe Ely said it, Hank Williams III said it, Bobby Koefer from the Texas Playboys said it, as have countless music fans and writers when referring to Hancock's authentic and original blend of honky tonk, western swing, blues and big band that he calls "juke joint swing!"

Afro-Cuban Folkloric Dance Class
If you are enchanted by Afro-Cuban rhythms and dances then you will enjoy our ongoing classes in Afro-Cuban Folkloric Dance. Join us as we learn a variety of Orisha dances from the Santería/Yoruba/Lucumí tradition; Bantú dance from the Palo complex; and social dances such as Rumba and Comparsa.

Each class includes a warm-up; instruction in basic movements; creation of choreographies out of the basic steps; and discussion of the historical and cultural roots of the various Afro-Cuban dances. The highlight of each week's class is the traditional dance circle where each dancer takes a turn to put what he or she has learned into practice by dancing before the drums.

These high energy classes are accompanied by a battery of live drummers from Grupo Folklórico Palo Santo playing authentic Afro-Cuban instruments and rhythms; and singing traditional Afro-Cuban songs.

These ongoing classes are open to dancers of all different ability and experience levels. No previous formal dance training is necessary. Newcomers are always welcome.

A fun opportunity to network and hang out with other people in a variety of professional fields.. Outside Patio of Hotel Northampton if weather is good or inside at the upper level bar if not... Free for NAYP Members $5 for guests 5-8pm Some background info about Hotel Northampton and the featured non-profit: The history of the Hotel Northampton begins with Lewis Wiggins, an entrepreneur who had a great interest in preserving the Colonial Revival theme when constructing the Hotel Northampton in 1927. An integral element of Wiggins' concept was to achieve museum status for the hotel's furnishings, and to this end he acquired antiques both for the hotel and for his own collection. Many of these antiques still grace the hallways, restaurants, and lobby. The collection was added to daily, and by 1937 Wiggins employed a full-time antiquarian curator with a staff of up to 15. Two staff members were assigned only to mingle with the guests and discuss the hotel and its antiques. The featured non-profit at September's event is Best Buddies. Best Buddies is a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Amy Speace
Amy Speace
Live performance in intimate auditorium.

“I kind of spilled blood all over this project,” Amy Speace says of her new album The Killer In Me, which marks a quantum creative leap from the artist’s 2006 breakthrough effort Songs For Bright Street.

While the earlier release won her widespread critical acclaim and a loyal international fan base, The Killer In Me finds the New York-based singer/songwriter forging into deeper, darker lyrical and musical terrain, borne largely out of relationships gone wrong, then right and wrong again.

This August, Speace released her second album on the label, Killer in Me, its message a resolutely hopeful take on heartache and loss, her beautiful lyrics spun with a soulful, husky voice that lilts like a country sweetheart but mourns like Leonard Cohen.” – Paste Magazine

After a lifetime in music, some of my biggest thrills come from a loud 'n' twisted or softly mesmerizing remake — [like Amy Speace's cover of Blondie’s “Dreaming”].“ – John James, Esquire Magazine

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there a fundraising minimum?

All Out Adventures is committed to providing low or no cost outdoor recration programming to people of all abilities. We operate about 140 programs each year that cost no more than $5. In order to continue to offer our programs for no or low cost, we must raise approximately $65,000 through different sources this year. The Kayak-a-thon is our signature fundraising event, and the $150/boat or $450/4-person team minimum ensures the continued success of the event and the viability of our organization.

This year we are requesting that people call us to reserve a kayak after they have met their fundraising minimum. This is to help us plan for how many kayaks to bring to the event because we have a limited number of kayaks available and limited space on our trailer. We want to ensure the kayaks are available for those who can participate while meeting the fundraising minimum.

How do I go about fundraising?

Our most successful fundraisers ask several people for a little bit of money. If you are kayaking 13 miles, you only need to ask 12 people to sponsor you for $1/mile! Co-workers, family, and friends would all be likely to part wtih $13 to support your participation in the event. Alternatively, you can approach a few people for more money. It would only take 3 people to each sponsor you for $50. Still nervous? Give us a call for advice, tips, and encouragement! Or, join up with a team so you can share the fundraising responsibilities.

Which distance should I pick?

13 miles is a long, but manageable distance. Those who have little kayaking experience and are unsure of their stamina should either choose the 6-mile option or opt to go in a tandem kayak with a more experienced kayaker. Those who have good physical and mental stamina may choose to challenge themselves with the 13-mile option. Though we stop in Hatfield mid-way, those who choose the 13-mile option should be prepared to paddle the entire distance. We are not prepared to assist paddlers in ending the event early early except for emergencies.

How long will the event last?

We expect to arrive in Northampton around 3:15pm. However, many factors - including the kayaking strength of the group and the strength of the river current - impact our timing. You will want to allow plenty of time in your day's schedule for us to arrive in Northampton later than that.

What else should I know?

Imagine being on the water with 30 - 40 other kayaks! It's an amazing feeling, and a wonderful, fun, supportive event in which to participate. We paddle as a group toward one goal: raising the funding necessary to keep low or no cost outdoor recreation programming accessible to people with disabilities and their family and friends.
